Photosynthesis and respiration are central to O Level Biology. Here's a clear guide:
Photosynthesis
Equation
6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Location: Chloroplasts (especially thylakoids)
Light-Dependent Reactions
- Occur in thylakoid membranes
- Light energy splits water molecules
- Produces ATP and NADPH (energy carriers)
- Releases oxygen as byproduct
Light-Independent Reactions (Calvin Cycle)
- Occur in stroma
- Uses ATP and NADPH from light reactions
- Fixes CO₂ into glucose
- Doesn't directly need light
Factors Affecting Photosynthesis
- Light intensity: More light = faster up to saturation point
- Temperature: Enzymes work optimally at ~25°C
- CO₂ concentration: More CO₂ = faster (up to saturation)
Cellular Respiration
Aerobic Respiration
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + Energy (ATP)
Anaerobic Respiration
Without oxygen - produces ethanol or lactate
Stages
- Glycolysis (Cytoplasm): Glucose → Pyruvate + ATP + NADH
- Krebs Cycle (Mitochondria): More ATP and NADH from pyruvate
- Electron Transport Chain: Uses NADH/FADH₂ → ATP production
Energy Yield
- Anaerobic: 2 ATP per glucose
- Aerobic: 32-38 ATP per glucose (much more energy)
Study Tips
- Understand equations FIRST
- Then learn the processes
- Know these are opposite processes
- Practice drawing cycle diagrams
- Understand WHY each stage happens
Pakistan-Specific Context
- Photosynthesis provides food for plants we consume
- Respiration happens in all living cells
- Know importance for agriculture
Exam Skills
- Calculate energy values
- Explain why factors affect rate
- Draw and label diagrams
- Compare aerobic and anaerobic
Getting these processes right often improves O Level Biology grades by 1-2 grades. Many students struggle here initially but master it quickly with good explanation.
