Getting into a top UK university requires more than good grades. Here's what universities want:
Academic Requirements
- Grades: AAA or higher for Russell Group
- Specific A Level subjects for your course
- Strong GCSE grades (passing grades in English and Maths)
- Additional qualifications (A* in STEP, MAT, etc. for some courses)
Beyond Grades
- Personal Statement: Shows your passion and understanding
- References: Teachers' recommendations matter
- Interviews: Shows thinking ability and communication
- Extracurricular Activities: Shows breadth of interests
- Work Experience: Real-world understanding of your field
Choosing A Levels
- Pick subjects you're genuinely interested in
- Consider what's required for your degree
- Balance humanities, sciences, and languages
- Don't just pick because they're "easy"
Preparation Timeline
- Upper figures (Year 12): Focus on getting good grades first
- Lower Sixth: Start thinking about personal statement
- Year 12-13: Build relevant experience (volunteering, projects)
- October Year 13: Submit UCAS application
